City Guard at Fort Greene

City Guard at Fort Greene imageDetail from Sheet Music Cover, “The Brooklyn City Guard Quickstep”

One need only be exposed to a bit of Jane Austen to understand the allure of the local City Guard to the youth of the era. It was much the same in American cities. Eligible young ladies could do worse than a military guardsman, and the young men were surely drawn to serve less by duty than by camaraderie and the promise of connubial conquest.
